Stories of Lost Children

Losing Baby Matt
by Ebony D. Taylor, Bedford, OH, U.S.A.

After 9 months of a great pregnancy, no complications, my husband and I had to experience losing our first child due to a cord prolapse. On August 30th I was 38 weeks and 7 days and around 3 a.m., I went to the bathroom to pee. Before I could pee, the mucus plug came out in the toilet. I then peed and returned to bed. Then about an hour later, I felt a gush of fluid, assuming it was my water breaking. I woke my husband up and we went to a hospital nearby. When we got there, they gave me an ultrasound and checked the baby’s heart rate. They then informed they didn’t have the necessary equipment to check to see if my water had broken and sent me on my way to another hospital.

Upon getting to the other hospital, they completed 2 cervical test and 2 ultrasounds. They told me I was having contractions, dilated 1cm, and my water hadn’t broken yet. I was feeling was mucus and they sent me home. That night the contractions got worse as expected.

That next morning, I was having contractions but not bad enough to feel I should return to the hospital. I then went to the bathroom to pee. Right after I peed, my water broke in the toilet. When it broke the fluid was brown. I was unsure if it was dried up blood from the cervical exam or what so I didn’t panic. I then stood up to wipe and in that very moment, I felt something drop. I had no clue what it was so I called on my sister to come check on me. We were all confused we initially thought it was a bad hemorrhoid, my mom thought it was more mucus. I had my sister take a picture of it. As soon as she showed it to me, I realized it was the UMBILICAL CORD. None of us had ever heard of such a thing happening. I was in no pain but knew that wasn’t normal. We immediately left and went to the hospital.
After about a 20 to 30-minute drive to the hospital, I walked myself to the area that I needed to go to and they immediately rushed me into the back. A nurse told me lay down and immediately rammed her hand up me trying to push the baby’s head off the umbilical cord. They told me his heart rate was very low and that they needed to do an emergency C Section. All I remember was me crying and asking them to please save my baby. I then woke up from the surgery and there was a nurse by my side. I asked her of my baby was okay and she just looked at me and told me the doctor would be in to talk to me. I immediately broke down crying as I knew that meant my son didn’t make it. I just wish they would have induced me the day before when I was at the hospital but they say because I wasn’t exactly 39 weeks they didn’t! But we never know exactly when the baby was made but none of that matters now!

I had the nursery all ready, the car seat in the car and my hospital bag all packed but I was never ready to lose my baby boy. Now I sit at home on maternity leave, healing from a C Section and trying to dry out breast milk since I have no child to care for.
