Stories of Lost Children

Devin Gregory Taylor
by Angela Baskins, Taylor, SC, U.S.A.

My son had just turned 3 when he passed away. He was beautiful, with his blond hair and blue eyes. We were staying a couple of weeks with my brother and his family until I was able to move to Ohio. The week before we were to leave I let my daughter, who was 8, spend the weekend with my parents. They brought her back on Sunday afternoon around 2:40 PM and I went out to the truck to help get her stuff. I had left my son and 22 month old nephew standing in the doorway waving at grandma & grandpa. Suddenly the door slammed and I turned around to see what was going on when I saw smoke. I threw everything in the air and ran to the door, but it would not open so I started banging on the door asking my son to open the door. I really don't remember much after that, but I was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, shock, & hysteria. My brother had been able to get his son, but could no one could get my son.

The coroner called to let me know that it wasn't much of a consulation, but that my son did not suffer, he just went to sleep. We had a closed casket, so for me there was/is no real closure for me. The last memory of my son was of him standing in the doorway smiling and waving at his grandparents. He was taken from me so fast and tragically.

It's been 5 years, 7 months and 3 days and the pain is still fresh. I now have a 19 month old son who looks just like his brother, so much so that sometimes it hurts just to look at him. Sometimes I catch myself calling him Devin and then I feel so bad after that I wonder if I'm a bad mother. My precious son is in Heaven now and I know that one day I WILL see him again. He may have died in a fire, but he still lives on in our hearts.
